Documents & Ceremony
What Couples Commonly Need to Prepare
Couples commonly need: valid passports for both partners; full birth certificates (with certified translation and apostille); a certificate of no impediment to marry (certificat de coutume) or equivalent; if previously married, the final divorce decree or death certificate. A civil ceremony (mariage civil) is performed by the local mayor or deputy at the mairie (town hall), and is the only legally binding ceremony in France. A religious ceremony may follow but has no legal standing without the civil ceremony. Some municipalities require a period of residency or a published notice (bans) before the ceremony.
Typical Lead Times
General Ranges
Most couples begin planning 6 to 12 months in advance. Document preparation, including translations and apostilles, commonly takes several weeks to a few months. The published notice (bans) is typically posted at the mairie approximately 10 days before the ceremony.
Seasonal Notes
When to Go
May and June offer warm weather, rose season, and lighter crowds. July is peak lavender season and very popular. August is peak holiday season in France, with the most crowds and highest prices. September offers grape harvest season and excellent weather. October brings autumn colours and cooler temperatures. The Mistral wind can be strong in winter and early spring.

Rain & Wind Contingency Checklist
- 01
Ask your marquee or tent supplier for the wind rating and confirm secure weights for all structures.
- 02
Confirm a covered backup ceremony space with your venue at the time of booking, not the week of.
- 03
Have a rain plan for hair and makeup — a covered or indoor area with power.
- 04
Brief your photographer on the wet-weather shot list so no time is lost if conditions change.
- 05
Provide umbrellas in your wedding colours for guests; they double as props.
- 06
Check the sunset time for your date and location; build your golden-hour window around it.
- 07
If outdoors in summer, confirm shade for the ceremony and arrival drinks.
- 08
For coastal or exposed venues, ask about the prevailing wind direction when planning florals.
- 09
Have a heated or cooled backup area if your season brings temperature extremes.
- 10
Confirm the last-minute weather call deadline with your venue and caterer.
